Bayern Munich’s 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg on Sunday in the first round of the Bundesliga featured a historic appearance by Thomas Müller.
According to the German Press Agency, Müller came on as a substitute in the 65th minute for defender Sacha Boey, and his presence had an immediate impact, as Bayern equalized shortly after with Wolfsburg’s Jacob Kaminski accidentally scoring an own goal under pressure from Müller during the play.
This appearance marked Müller’s 709th game for Bayern Munich, equaling the record held by former goalkeeper and club legend Sepp Maier.
Commenting on this, Bayern Munich stated on their official website: “This man embodies Bayern Munich like no other, and now he has achieved two incredible milestones. By appearing in his 709th game for the club, he matched the record held by goalkeeping legend Sepp Maier, who previously held the record for the most appearances with the team.”
The statement added: “The Wolfsburg match was also significant for Müller as it was his 474th Bundesliga appearance for Bayern, surpassing Maier’s record for the most Bundesliga appearances for the club.”
Müller has played 709 games for Bayern Munich, scoring 244 goals and winning 32 titles since beginning his career with the team in 2008.
