Flood of Khor Baraka Engulfs Tokar, Al-Burhan Inspects the Affected

*Events – Follow-ups:*

The Emergency Committee of Tokar city in the southern Red Sea State reported that the number of flood victims from the Khor Baraka River reached nine people, with expectations of more victims as many people remain missing. The committee appealed for the provision of shrouds, noting that cemeteries are surrounded by water up to two meters high.

The floodwaters inundated Tokar city from two directions (the Ashol opening) and (the Aroetai opening) following the collapse of the new bridge linking Tokar and Aqiq cities, leading to the rise in the Baraka River’s level and the opening of several channels outside the main course, which caused the floodwaters to enter the city and destroy hundreds of houses. Most residents spent the night outdoors, fearing their homes would collapse.

The Emergency Committee of Tokar city confirmed that all hospitals ceased operations amid a total absence of government presence, along with the disruption of communication networks in most neighborhoods. The situation was described as catastrophic, with calls for urgent intervention from both the international and local communities, especially with people stranded in areas south of Tokar, such as Marafeit and Aqiq, who need immediate rescue by air.

In this context, the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, visited the areas affected by floods and rains in Tokar locality, accompanied by the Governor of the Red Sea State, Lieutenant General Mustafa Mohamed Nour.

The Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and his accompanying delegation reviewed the extent of the damages and losses suffered by the citizens in the locality.

He also inspected the roads, bridges, and culverts affected by the floods and rains in the area, stressing the state’s commitment and support for the rain and flood victims, saying, “We will provide all necessary assistance and support to alleviate their suffering and mobilize all state resources to help the affected people overcome this ordeal.”

Al-Burhan also participated in the funeral ceremonies of the flood and rain victims who swept through the locality, offering his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
