Brazilian left-back Alex Sandro has returned to his home country through Flamengo after nine years with Juventus, the Rio de Janeiro club announced on Monday.
The club said on its account on “X”: “Alex Sandro has many titles in his record, and now he has only one goal; to win more in the red and black jersey. Welcome, Alex Sandro.”
Flamengo, currently fourth in the league with 44 points, four points behind the leader Fortaleza, explained that the player signed a contract that extends until December 2026.
Sandro’s contract with Juventus ended at the conclusion of last season, having joined them in 2015.
He began his professional career with Atlético Paranaense in 2008, and also played with Santos in 2010 and 2011 alongside Neymar, the former star of Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, and currently with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, before moving to Porto in Portugal.
He joined Juventus in 2015, where he played more than 300 matches in various competitions, achieving 12 titles, including six in the league and five in the cup.
The defender has also played 40 matches with the Brazilian national team and participated in the 2022 World Cup, though he has not been called up since.
Sandro will replace Filipe Luís, a former Chelsea and Atlético Madrid player, after he announced his retirement last year.
Flamengo, Brazil’s most popular club, remains in contention for the league title and has also qualified for the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores.
