World Food Programme Investigates Two Senior Officials in Sudan
Sudan Events – Agencies
Eleven informed sources reported that the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is investigating two of its senior officials in Sudan over allegations including fuel disappearance, fraud, and withholding information from donors regarding its ability to deliver food aid to civilians. The investigation, conducted by the WFP’s Office of the Inspector General, comes as the UN food assistance agency works tirelessly to provide food supplies to millions of people in Sudan.
Five sources told Reuters that the investigators are examining whether WFP staff attempted to cover up a suspected role of the Sudanese army in obstructing aid amid the ongoing 16-month conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Some sources indicated that the WFP is also investigating the disappearance of fuel supplies in Sudan and is conducting an urgent review of allegations related to mismanagement in its operations.
In response to Reuters’ inquiry about the investigation, the WFP said that allegations of misconduct involving individuals in relation to operational violations in Sudan are under urgent review by the Office of the Inspector General. The program declined to comment on the nature of the alleged violations or the status of specific employees.
