Report Reveals 100,000 People Detained in Militia Prisons

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

Multiple reports and eyewitness accounts in Sudan have revealed that the number of civilians abducted and held in secret prisons by the Rapid Support Forces militia (victims of enforced disappearance) in the states of Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, the five Darfur states, the three Kordofan states, and Sennar State exceeds 100,000 kidnapped individuals.
According to the reports, the detainees are held under harsh conditions, suffering from torture, humiliation, malnutrition, and lack of medical care, with several thousand having already died.
It is worth noting that Reuters News Agency published an extensive report in June 2023 estimating the number of abductees in Rapid Support Forces prisons at 5,000 Sudanese citizens, including women, elderly, and children. The Sudanese newspaper had previously published a report on these prisons in the capital, confirming that the militia had converted several large houses, hospitals, government institutions, and police stations into detention centers, with these prisons spread across the capital. Eyewitnesses also reported that the militia had converted Ibn Sina Hospital in Khartoum (Al-Amarat neighborhood) into a prison where thousands of citizens are detained on charges of collaborating with the army. It is reported that more than 15,000 citizens are held in the Soba prison, and that the secret prisons of the Rapid Support Forces contain thousands of abductees from retired members of the regular forces who left service years ago. The rebels abduct civilians, extort their families, and demand hefty ransoms with threats of killing the detainees if their families refuse to pay. The militia recently abducted journalist Alaa Eldin Abu Harba from his home in Al-Haj Yousif neighborhood, East Nile, and extorted his family for ransom. Abu Harba was shown in a video with his hands tied, urging his family to quickly pay the specified ransom.
