Military Option Alone Is Not the Solution in Gaza, Says German Foreign Minister

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated on Friday that a purely military option is not the solution to Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. Speaking to reporters after her meeting with her Israeli counterpart Yisrael Katz, she said, “The past weekend showed tragically that a purely military option is not the solution for the situation in Gaza,” referring to the discovery of the bodies of six hostages in Gaza on Sunday.
Before her tour, Baerbock used unusually clear language to urge the Israeli government not to close the door to negotiations on a two-state solution, which aims to establish an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. She said, “Members of the Israeli government who question the two-state solution in word and deed endanger Israel’s long-term security.”
Baerbock is scheduled to visit Ramallah in the West Bank to meet with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa. She believes that the Palestinian Authority could play a key role in post-war arrangements in Gaza.
