Portugal coach Roberto Martinez heaped praise on captain Cristiano Ronaldo after he scored his 900th career goal in the win over Croatia. Martinez said reaching 1,000 goals would not be impossible for the 39-year-old. “I don’t think scoring 900 goals is easy. It’s an incredible historical achievement, an inspiration in the world of football,” Martinez said.
He continued, “I don’t think anyone can say Cristiano can’t do something. What he’s doing in football is unbelievable.”
Martinez also acknowledged the upcoming challenge against Scotland in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday.
Portugal began their campaign with a 2-1 win over Croatia on Thursday, while Scotland lost 2-3 to Poland after conceding a late penalty.
Martinez expressed confidence in Scotland’s strength ahead of their matchup in Group A of League A in Lisbon.
“Our players are aware of the strength of British football, and Scotland’s style reflects that – great physicality, fast attacks, and experience. We know the difference, but Scotland plays a direct and vertical game, and they can hold the ball. They’ve shown in their last two games a strong desire to win. They lost their last match after conceding late goals. They play a direct style and have high-caliber, experienced players. It’s not just a physically strong British team, but one with great skills. It will be a very competitive match, and we’ve prepared for that.”
