US Open: Australian pair Purcell and Thompson claim doubles title

Australian duo Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson rebounded from their Wimbledon final loss and claimed the US Open men’s doubles title by defeating Germany’s Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-4, 7-6 in Saturday’s final.
The seventh-seeded Australian pair, who failed to convert three match points during the Wimbledon doubles final in July, needed three match points to seal the win on Saturday in New York, despite a comeback from the German duo in the second set.
Purcell and Thompson became the first Australian pair to win the US Open men’s doubles title since Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde, who clinched the title in 1996.
Purcell earned his second doubles title at a Grand Slam, having won Wimbledon in 2022 alongside fellow Australian Matthew Ebden, while this marks Thompson’s first major title.
