Sudan Events – Follow-ups
On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously voted to extend the arms embargo in Darfur, in accordance with Resolutions 2750 and 1556. However, Russia, China, Sierra Leone, and Ghana opposed a proposal by France to extend the arms embargo to the entire Sudan.
The Security Council targeted individuals and entities involved in the Darfur conflict. The sanctions include travel bans, asset freezes, and an arms embargo. A sanctions committee oversees the implementation, along with an expert panel that gathers compliance information and reports back to the council.
US Deputy Envoy to the United Nations, Robert Wood, thanked council members for their constructive participation in renewing the Sudan sanctions regime for an additional 12 months.
Wood highlighted the “danger and despair” facing the people of Darfur and stated, “This adoption sends an important message that the international community remains focused on their plight and is committed to promoting peace and security in Sudan and the region.”
He added that the renewal of sanctions would restrict arms movement to Darfur and impose penalties on individuals and entities contributing to destabilization in Sudan.
