Attorney General: UN Fact-Finding Committee is Politically Motivated

Sudan Events – Agencies
Sudan’s Attorney General, Fateh Tayfour, who also heads the national committee investigating crimes and violations of national and international law, confirmed that the government, along with 16 other countries, had opposed the formation of the UN fact-finding committee on Sudan from the start.
He explained, according to Al Jazeera Net, that the resolution passed with 19 votes to 16, a mere difference of three votes. Tayfour stated that the committee has overstepped its mandate and authority.
In response to the committee’s recommendations, particularly those calling for the deployment of neutral forces to protect civilians and the expansion of the arms embargo to all of Sudan, Tayfour emphasized that these issues fall outside the committee’s jurisdiction, and thus the government rejected them entirely.
He added that the government submitted a 11-page critique to the committee’s chair, dissecting the report “paragraph by paragraph.” In his opinion, the committee had become politicized, and he rejected the idea of using the Human Rights Council as a political tool.
