Sources from the “Gorm” refugee camp in South Sudan revealed on Friday that 113 cases of abortion and three cases of rape were recorded among Sudanese refugee women recently.
A source within the camp told “Sudan Tribune” that “113 abortions occurred among Sudanese refugees due to lack of medical follow-up, inadequate food, and saline water in the camp.”
The source also disclosed that three girls were raped inside the camp, and admitted there are challenges facing the 9,360 Sudanese refugee women, including lack of security, protection, and access to clean drinking water.
The source complained about the slow and sometimes incomplete registration procedures, which result in long waiting periods, and occasionally the rejection of individuals’ registrations.
The source also mentioned the struggles of refugees due to the absence of routine vaccinations for women and children, relying only on campaigns during outbreaks. Additionally, the camp lacks suitable infrastructure, exposing women and children to serious health risks.
The source called on the South Sudanese government to provide security and protection in the camp, along with healthcare services for pregnant women, and to offer educational opportunities and psychological support. Many of the girls in the camp had been raped in conflict zones before arriving in South Sudan.
The source urged the international community to respond urgently by providing humanitarian aid and encouraging international organizations, governments, and civil society to collaborate to find sustainable and effective solutions to improve living conditions in the camp.
