Al-Assad Appoints the First Prime Minister from the Golan
Sudan Events – Agencies
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree on Saturday appointing Dr. Mohammad Ghazi Al-Jallali to form the new government in Syria. He is the first figure from the Golan Heights to be tasked with forming a government during the terms of both the late President Hafez al-Assad and his son President Bashar.
It was notable that President Assad entrusted Jallali with the task of forming the new government after “consultations with the central leadership of the Arab Socialist Baath Party.” This is the first time Damascus has announced consultations on appointing a new prime minister; for about five decades, government formation consultations were typically conducted within the top circles of power, away from the media.
Dr. Jallali was born in Damascus in 1969 but hails from the occupied Golan Heights. He previously served as a minister between 2014 and 2016 before stepping out of the spotlight to serve as president of the Syrian Private University in 2023. His name resurfaced with his entry into the central committee of the Baath Party in mid-July during parliamentary elections.
