Al-Burhan Agrees to Salva Kiir’s Initiative to Mediate Sudan’s War

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

The government of South Sudan announced that the Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council and Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has agreed to South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s initiative to mediate and resolve the conflict in Sudan.
Al-Burhan held joint talks with Salva Kiir in Juba on Monday, discussing the situation in Sudan, renewed peace agreements in South Sudan, and arrangements for resuming oil exports through Sudanese ports.
Sudanese Foreign Minister-designate Hussein Awad stated in a press release that both leaders agreed to open humanitarian corridors to deliver aid to those affected by the war in Sudan, particularly from South Sudan to Kadugli in South Kordofan State. He added that the humanitarian assistance would be carried out through a joint plan between Sudan and South Sudan.
Awad also noted that the two sides agreed to resume the flow of oil through Sudanese pipelines and its export to global markets within a month after completing all necessary arrangements.
Sources told “Sudan Tribune” that Juba proposed an initiative to engage with Sudanese parties to end the conflict, and Salva Kiir’s advisor has already contacted leaders of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to establish a common ground for discussions with the army to cease the conflict.
Regional actors have also encouraged Juba’s initiative to communicate with both sides of the conflict to reach a resolution. South Sudanese Foreign Minister Ramadan Mohammed Abdullah stated that Al-Burhan agreed to President Salva Kiir’s mediation proposal to resolve the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
Ramadan further mentioned that technical preparations for the eastern pipeline that transports South Sudan’s oil have been completed, and a Sudanese technical team visited South Sudan to review the final arrangements and provide a detailed report to President Salva Kiir before the resumption of oil flow. Both parties also agreed on the importance of preventing further sabotage of the oil pipelines.
