Al-Burhan: We Look Forward to International Support that Respects Our National Choices

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

The President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, stated that Sudan is on the brink of a new phase, as citizens continue to suffer from the ravages of a war imposed on them.

Speaking at the virtual presidential summit “Global Call for the Summit of the Future,” he emphasized that he sees this summit as an opportunity to restore confidence in the UN system to enhance international cooperation.

He said that the “Future Charter” being drafted should serve as a roadmap for countries facing conflicts caused by foreign interference in their internal affairs, and that a strong international commitment is needed to prevent such interference and hold those responsible accountable.

He added, “We believe the charter should include effective mechanisms to hold accountable countries that incite conflicts and take measures to protect nations from escalating these conflicts. We emphasize the importance of transitional justice and national reconciliation, as the charter should provide a framework to support these processes while respecting each country’s uniqueness.”

He also stressed the need for international support in building strong national institutions, saying, “Our experience in Sudan has proven that institutionalism is the true guarantee of stability and development.”

He emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty of states while promoting shared responsibility, noting that “in Sudan, we look forward to international support that respects our national choices and helps us rise again to achieve sustainable peace through national ownership.”

Al-Burhan also highlighted the importance of regional and international cooperation in combating terrorism and organized crime, stressing that these challenges know no borders and require coordinated global efforts to address the growing threat of ethnic terrorism targeting the state, infrastructure, and services in Sudan.
