Turkey’s Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, announced today (Friday) the arrest of 88 people suspected of belonging to the Islamic State (ISIS).
Yerlikaya stated on his account on “X” that the suspects were apprehended as part of an operation coordinated between the intelligence and counter-terrorism departments of the General Directorate of Security, according to the Turkish Anadolu Agency.
The minister said: “88 suspects were arrested during ongoing operations over the past five days against the ISIS terrorist organization in 23 provinces,” as reported by the German News Agency.
Turkey’s security forces have been conducting raids to track down ISIS elements in response to attacks claimed by the group in the country over several years, which have killed and injured dozens of people.
Among these attacks was an assault on a nightclub in Istanbul on New Year’s Eve in 2017, which left 39 people dead and 79 others injured.
