Calls from Geneva Mediators Urge Militias to Cease Attacks on El Fasher

Sudan Events – Reports

The “Coalition for Sudan” group has called on the Rapid Support Forces militia to cease its attacks on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State. The group appealed to the international community to join calls for calm in El Fasher for humanitarian purposes. Their statement called for a humanitarian truce in Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, and Sennar, and the opening of humanitarian corridors for those in need. The group urged warring military parties to ensure the safe departure of civilians from conflict zones and to respect the rules and conduct of engagements, taking measures to minimize civilian harm. The statement also revealed plans for an expanded international meeting in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly later this month to garner international support for highlighting the conflict in Sudan and ending the suffering of its people. The statement welcomed reports of humanitarian operations moving from Port Sudan to Shendi to reach Khartoum, noting that while these developments are positive, they are insufficient to meet comprehensive humanitarian needs. It stressed the need for both the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces to facilitate aid access to civilian areas, including from Khartoum to Omdurman and Kosti.
