The Egyptian star Mohamed Salah became the all-time top African scorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League after scoring a goal for his team, Liverpool, against Bologna on Wednesday.
Salah reached 45 goals in Europe’s most prestigious tournament, with 42 of them for Liverpool, who won 2-0 against their Italian opponent in the second round.
The former Roma and Basel player surpassed Ivorian Didier Drogba, who had shared the top spot with him with 44 goals.
Salah moved up to 14th place among the all-time top scorers in the Champions League, just one goal behind the late Portuguese legend Eusebio and the retired Italian Filippo Inzaghi. He is also only four goals away from breaking into the top ten scorers in the history of the competition, which is led by Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo with 140 goals.
This goal also marked Salah’s 350th career goal as a professional player, making him the top African scorer in the Premier League with 161 goals, well ahead of his closest rivals, Senegalese Sadio Mane, currently playing for Al-Nassr with 112 goals, and Drogba with 104 goals.
Salah began his career with Al Mokawloon in Egypt, scoring 12 goals during the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons before moving to Basel, where he netted 20 goals in a season and a half.
In January 2014, he transferred to Chelsea, where he only scored two goals before being loaned to Fiorentina in Italy, where he scored nine goals. After his loan ended, he moved from Chelsea to Roma in the summer of 2015, where he scored 34 goals in two seasons.
In the summer of 2017, Salah moved to Liverpool, where his talent exploded, scoring 217 goals in seven seasons, placing him fifth on Liverpool’s all-time top scorer list. He has also scored 161 goals in the Premier League, placing him tenth on the all-time Premier League top scorers list, led by Alan Shearer with 260 goals.
Internationally, Salah has scored 56 goals for Egypt’s national team, ranking him second on the Pharaohs’ all-time top scorers list behind the current coach, Hossam Hassan, with 68 goals.
Salah also became the first Liverpool player to score in five consecutive home matches at Anfield in the Champions League.
In a televised interview, Salah said, “I didn’t know this statistic, but I’m definitely happy with the record.”
He added, “The most important thing is for the team to win matches and trophies. This season has been different under the new coach (Dutchman Arne Slot) compared to (German) Jürgen Klopp, and we are still adapting to the new system. We hope the results continue like this.”
