Senior Aide to British Prime Minister Resigns

Sue Gray, the Chief of Staff to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, resigned on Sunday after facing intense scrutiny during the early months of the Labour Party government in power.

According to AFP, Gray said she resigned after it became “clear to me that the intense commentary around my position risks becoming a distraction from the vital work of the government for change.”

The resignation follows British media reports of tensions at the top of the government between Gray and several political advisers, as well as revelations about her salary, which exceeded Starmer’s.

Disputes overshadowed last month’s Labour Party conference, including internal clashes and anger over Starmer accepting gifts worth thousands of pounds. Since then, the Prime Minister has been trying to regain control.

In a statement on Sunday, Starmer expressed his thanks to Gray for her service throughout her tenure.

He said, “I want to thank Sue for all the support she has given me, both in opposition and in government, her work preparing us for government, and her assistance in launching our change agenda.”

He added, “Sue played a vital role in strengthening our relationships with many regions and countries.”

Gray, who previously led the “Partygate” investigation into former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s illegal lockdown parties, will take on a new governmental role as “Ambassador to Regions and Nations.”

She will be replaced by Moran McSweeney, who previously ran the Labour Party’s election campaign.
