Sudan Events – Follow-ups
In its third session of the year held on Monday in Port Sudan, the Zakat Board of Trustees announced that the zakat collection for the first nine months of the year reached 180 billion Sudanese pounds, achieving 113% of the target.
The Minister of Social Development and President of the Supreme Council of Zakat Trustees, Moulana Ahmed Adam Bakhit, praised the significant role played by the Zakat Chamber amidst the ongoing war since last year. He noted that the chamber has remained committed to fulfilling its duties effectively.
During his address at the third session attended by three state governors and directors of the various departments, Bakhit highlighted the chamber’s success in carrying out its regular and emergency activities, focusing on supporting shelters, wounded individuals, and patients.
In a related context, the representative of the Secretary-General of the Zakat Chamber, Al-Amin Ali Al-Lua, stated that the collections in the first nine months of the year reached 113%, with a major contribution from agricultural zakat. He mentioned that the collection focused on only seven states, as others were entirely or partially inaccessible due to the war.
Al-Lua revealed that 50% of the “fi sabilillah” (in the way of Allah) funds were allocated to support the war effort. He added that the chamber supported 1,630 shelters with 3.6 billion pounds and allocated 2.1 billion pounds for medical treatment inside and outside Sudan, benefiting 36,000 health insurance cardholders. He expects health insurance expenditure to reach 28 billion pounds next year.
He also noted that the chamber recently supported the voluntary return program for citizens to safe areas, with over 30 convoys leaving from Gedaref State.
Al-Lua mentioned that the Zakat Chamber’s secretariat was chosen by the African Union to represent social institutions on the continent at an upcoming conference in Cairo, Egypt.
