Sudan Events – Agencies
The Minister of Agriculture and Forests, Dr. Abubakar Omar, addressed the general session of the fifty-second session of the Global Food Security Committee in Rome. In his speech, the Minister reviewed the systematic destruction of infrastructure, focusing on production areas, livelihoods, gene banks for plant and animal resources, and the ongoing threats to natural resources and biodiversity from the Rapid Support Forces and their regional and international backers. He highlighted their insistence on continuing the war to impoverish the Sudanese people and their resources, explaining that the rebel militia has continued for the past eighteen months to commit heinous crimes and violations against the Sudanese people, using starvation as a weapon of war. He clarified that the areas suffering from acute food insecurity are those under the control and siege of the Rapid Support Forces.
The Minister of Agriculture and Forests pointed to sufficient production of main crops according to harvest indicators for the current season and the cultivated areas, refuting claims of famine in Sudan. He urged the international community and donors to provide more urgent technical support to ensure the success of the agricultural season and called on them to condemn the violations committed by the rebel militia. He affirmed the commitment of the Sudanese government to international humanitarian law and the pursuit of a just peace to achieve sustainable agricultural and food systems and food security.
