Macron Renews Support for Morocco’s “Sovereignty” over the Sahara
French President Emmanuel Macron renewed his country’s support for Morocco’s “sovereignty” over the Sahara on Tuesday.
On the second day of his visit to Morocco, Macron stated in a speech before parliament, “I reaffirm to you that France considers the present and future of this region to fall within Moroccan sovereignty,” emphasizing that Paris, along with “economic actors and our partners, will support the development of this region through sustainable investments and initiatives for the benefit of its people,” as France acts in accordance with its interpretation of international law. Macron also stated that Paris is committed to “supporting Morocco in international forums” on the Sahara issue. Macron proposed that both parties sign a new treaty to form what he termed a “strategic framework” for future bilateral relations in 2025, during a “state visit” to France, which King Mohammed VI has agreed to undertake at Macron’s invitation.
