Hassan Hamad Al-Sayed, the Secretary-General of the River Nile Environmental Protection Council, revealed significant pollution in the residential, agricultural, and pastoral areas south of the city of Berber due to the accumulated mining waste.
Al-Sayed told Sudan Tribune that the Tripartite Committee, composed of the council, the local administration, and the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company, has decided to immediately remove the “karta” (mining waste) found south of Berber and instructed companies to relocate it to another area.
He confirmed that the relevant authorities are waiting for the companies’ response and will take immediate action if the directives are not implemented in accordance with the law.
The official also emphasized that there is a high level of pollution in areas containing large heaps of karta and traditional mining waste, which have caused significant environmental and health damage to the residential, agricultural, and pastoral areas, as well as the water, making this a legal violation punishable by law.
Al-Sayed promised to address the negative effects left by the karta in these areas, urging company owners to remove it immediately as it has caused substantial environmental harm.
In a related context, official sources in the River Nile State told Sudan Tribune that cancer cases in the state have risen to 70% this year.
The Shendi Cancer Center has recorded over 1,500 cancer cases since the outbreak of the war in April 2023, including around 700 cases registered by displaced people from outside the state, according to medical sources who spoke to Sudan Tribune.
