Sudan Events – Follow-Up
The Supreme Council of Zakat Trustees approved the 2025 budget on Tuesday in Port Sudan, totaling 280 billion SDG. The Minister of Social Welfare and Development, Ahmed Adam Bakhit, confirmed the budget’s approval, noting a 46% increase from the previous year. He emphasized that the budget was based on scientific considerations and the current conditions, expressing optimism about future improvements in the country’s situation and stability. The minister also commended the extensive efforts made by all administrative units and localities, highlighting that Zakat was among the first institutions to present its budget for the upcoming year.
Minister Bakhit noted Zakat’s effective contributions in responding to disasters and emergencies, supporting hospitals, shelters, refugees, and displaced persons. The Secretary-General of Zakat, Ahmed Ibrahim, described the budget as ambitious, encompassing all social protection tools for community groups, including religious schools, general schools, universities, shelters, war-wounded individuals, and patients inside and outside Sudan. The budget also included health insurance and debt repayment strategies that consider both states and the central government, with the formation of a technical committee to address operational challenges.
The council approved a 35% increase in the number of individuals covered by Zakat, marking a 5% rise from 2024. The meeting emphasized the need to support those affected by the conflict in various states, expand Zakat’s coverage, increase staff salaries—especially in the states—and approve a training plan for employees and programs for beneficiaries. The council also recommended including oil Zakat, reviewing it, and revisiting contributions to the National Health Insurance Fund, in addition to incentivizing Zakat staff.
