Michelle Kang to Donate $30 Million to U.S. Women’s Soccer Program
The U.S. Soccer Federation announced on Tuesday that Michelle Kang, a prominent figure in women’s soccer, will donate $30 million to the federation, marking the largest donation ever directed toward girls’ and women’s programs in the national organization.
The donation will support competitive opportunities for girls and the professional development of female players over the next five years, in addition to supporting women in coaching and officiating roles.
Cindy Parlow Cone, President of the U.S. Soccer Federation, said in a statement: “Michelle Kang’s gift will change women’s and girls’ soccer in the United States. It will impact generations of women and girls in our game.”
This donation comes just months after the U.S. women’s team won its fifth Olympic gold medal, a return to form for one of the most dominant teams in sports history, following their disappointing performance in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Kang, whose team Washington Spirit will compete in the U.S. Women’s Soccer League Championship against Orlando Pride this week, has become one of the most influential owners in the sport.
Last year, Kang launched the first multi-team women’s soccer foundation, which includes France’s Olympique Lyonnais Women and England’s London City Lionesses.
Kang stated: “Women’s sports have been undervalued and ignored for far too long. I am committed to raising the level of excellence in women’s soccer, both on and off the field, by providing the resources needed for the sport to reach its full potential.”
