Ankara: Assad Does Not Want Peace for His Country
Ankara stated that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad does not want peace for his country, warning that Israel’s attempts to spread war in the Middle East threaten the stability created by the “Astana Process,” which halted bloodshed in Syria. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that Russia and Iran’s efforts within the “Astana Process” for a political solution are crucial for maintaining calm on the ground, noting ongoing consultations with the U.S. regarding the Syrian crisis.
Fidan stated during a speech in parliament that Turkey cannot discuss withdrawing from Syria until a new constitution is adopted, elections are held, and borders are secured. He added that Assad’s administration’s stance suggests, “I do not want to return to peace.”
