82 Killed in Sectarian Violence in Pakistan Over Three Days
Violent sectarian clashes in northwestern Pakistan have left at least 82 people dead and 156 injured over three days, a local official said on Sunday.
The official from the Kurram region in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, who requested anonymity, told AFP that “the dead include 16 Sunnis, while 66 belong to the Shia sect.”
Yesterday (Saturday), Pakistani authorities reported at least 32 deaths from sectarian violence in the same region.
Since the summer, sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia communities in Kurram has resulted in around 150 fatalities.
Land disputes in the area often trigger clashes between tribal groups, where tribal honor codes frequently take precedence over the security forces’ attempts to enforce order.
