Minister of Agriculture Refutes Reports of Famine in Sudan

Sudan Events – Reports
Acting Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abubakr Omar Al-Bushra, has dismissed reports claiming a famine in Sudan, stating with evidence that the country possesses sufficient agricultural resources and opportunities to prevent such a crisis.
Speaking at a press conference in Port Sudan on Monday, the minister announced the success of the summer agricultural season and confirmed strong preparations for the winter farming season, which was launched in the Northern State in mid-November.
The minister refuted claims of famine by explaining that key indicators used to measure famine include malnutrition rates. He noted that those spreading these claims have neither collected data nor conducted studies on malnutrition in Sudan, instead basing their allegations on political motives.
Dr. Al-Bushra highlighted the harvest celebration held in early November in Kassala State and revealed that the expected grain production from the summer season ranges between 7 to 8 million tons, exceeding Sudan’s grain and crop needs. This, he asserted, disproves the famine narrative.
The minister further elaborated on preparations for the winter season, assuring that they are proceeding excellently.
He expressed the ministry’s appreciation for its partners, including international organizations related to the agricultural sector, fuel companies, and all parties that contributed to the success of the summer season and are aiding in winter season preparations.
Dr. Al-Bushra also addressed the damage caused by the Rapid Support Forces’ violations in the agricultural sector, acknowledging the resilience and achievements of the country despite these challenges.
He announced that the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has committed to resolving issues related to the Suki Agricultural Project by financing the replacement and repair of its four non-operational water pumps, enabling the project to resume operations.
