Sudan Events – Follow-ups
On Sunday, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, stated that he is working with Sudan to increase funding for the 2025 humanitarian response plan.
Fletcher arrived in Port Sudan, which has become the center for managing the country by the army, in his first visit to Sudan since assuming his position. He began his visit by meeting with the Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, Mona Nour El-Daim.
Fletcher, according to the Sudan News Agency, said that he “will work and cooperate with the government of Sudan to help increase funding for the 2025 humanitarian response plan.”
For her part, the Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, Mona Nour El-Daim, stated that donor funding this year had not reached the desired levels, pointing out that Sudan is experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis in its history.
The official emphasized the need to implement projects and interventions that alleviate the severity of the humanitarian situation faced by those affected by displacement. She called for an increase in funding for the humanitarian response plan for the coming year.
Nour El-Daim also called on the international community to condemn the atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces, and she mentioned that she discussed with Fletcher the situation of civilians in areas under the control of the Rapid Support Forces, including violations related to food, medical treatment, water, and freedom of movement. She also addressed the required facilities for the United Nations regarding entry visas, movement permits, and customs exemptions.
