On Monday, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, met with Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, alongside acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Omar Issa.
Ambassador Omar described the meeting as positive and productive, addressing humanitarian conditions and efforts to deliver aid to those in need. He noted that Fletcher expressed satisfaction with the Sudanese government’s facilitation of aid delivery and the access granted to UN teams in requested areas.
The Sovereign Council leader directed relevant authorities to collaborate with the UN and its agencies in Sudan. Ambassador Omar added that Al-Burhan expressed full satisfaction with existing cooperation and encouraged the UN to increase its efforts in delivering aid.
The government, Omar said, is prepared to open borders and airports to ensure aid flows smoothly. While reviewing certain UN requests, Sudan views some proposals as positive and will provide responses in the coming days.
Fletcher thanked the Sudanese government for its efforts to enhance humanitarian operations and aid delivery. He highlighted that his visit aimed to assess the situation on the ground and hear from field teams to take necessary measures to support humanitarian efforts.
The UN official reiterated the importance of partnership and collaboration between Sudan and the UN to address challenges in aid delivery, underscoring the organization’s commitment to reaching those in need.
