Warnings of Rising Prices of Imported Goods
Sudan Events – Rehabb Abdullah
Hashim Al-Fadl, the former treasurer of the National Chamber of Importers affiliated with the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, criticized the decision to increase the wages of cargo handling workers at the port (“klaat”) by 100%.
Al-Fadl warned that the increase in “klaat” fees would impact the prices of goods, especially imported ones, as the hike would double the cost of importing goods. He emphasized that both the importer and the consumer would be affected, as this increase would directly reflect in higher prices.
In his interview with Al-Ahdath, he mentioned that the price hike would not stop at 100%, explaining that the “klaat” workers had other calculated costs. He stated, “If you open the storage to ship 10 cartons of your goods, you will have to pay a full daily fee, which was 130,000 Sudanese pounds and has now become 260,000 pounds, plus an additional 15% fee for the ‘klaat’ association.”
The Governor of the Red Sea region had issued a decree raising the wages of “klaat” workers by 100%.
