Sudan Events – Rahab Abdullah
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Ministry of Finance announced on Thursday a $10 million initiative to enhance food security, livelihoods, and access to water and electricity in areas affected by mass displacement.
According to a joint statement, the program will benefit one million people and will initially be implemented in three states: Gedaref, River Nile, and Kassala. Funding includes $5 million from Silatech, $3.5 million from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, and $1.1 million from the federal government.
Swaroo Bozkova, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP, stated that food insecurity affects 26 million people in Sudan. She added that the program aims to mitigate food insecurity for over 63,000 households by supporting farmers and herders, providing improved seeds and fertilizers, creating 2,500 short-term jobs, and repairing 50 water stations and irrigation systems to ensure clean drinking water.
Ikhlas Mohamed, Director General of External Finance at the Ministry of Finance, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the ministry’s post-war recovery and rebuilding vision. She praised the partnership between the program and the ministry for its ongoing efforts.
