Al-Burhan (to European Envoy): Halting External Support to the Militia Will End the War

Sudan Events – Follow-up
On Sunday, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, met with the European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber, in the presence of Sudan’s Ambassador to Brussels, Abdul-Baqi Kabeer, and the EU’s representative.
Ambassador Kabeer stated that the meeting addressed the ongoing crisis in Sudan and the violations committed by the RSF militia against civilians. Al-Burhan explained that Sudanese people would not accept the militia’s presence in the country and emphasized the necessity of evacuating the militia from civilians’ homes and public properties in accordance with the Jeddah Declaration. He said that if the European Union genuinely wants to help end the war, it should use its influence to stop the political and logistical support to the militia, as halting such support is the key to ending the war.
He stated that as long as external support for the militia continues, the war will persist until the country is rid of this criminal group.
For her part, Annette Weber expressed her pleasure in visiting Sudan, highlighting that her meeting with the Chairman of the Sovereign Council was candid and constructive. She reiterated the EU’s interest in Sudan’s situation and emphasized that Europeans wish for Sudanese people to return to their homes, resume their normal lives, and receive humanitarian aid. She affirmed that the EU supports ending the war to allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need, ensure the resumption of education, and reopen hospitals.
The meeting also discussed the importance of the region playing a role in resolving the Sudanese crisis, alongside the international community’s contributions. Weber concluded by stating that ending the war in Sudan is the key to the Sudanese people’s return to their normal lives and the stabilization of the country.
