Avenpool, Cycling Champion, Undergoes Successful Surgery After Accident
Belgian Remco Evenepoel, the Olympic cycling champion, underwent successful surgery after suffering a serious accident in Belgium. He expressed hope that he would return stronger than before.
The circumstances of the accident, which took place on Tuesday in Oudegem near Brussels, are still unclear. The Belgian news agency “Belga” reported that he collided with an open door of a postal truck.
The Soudal-Quick-Step team, for which Evenepoel plays, stated that he suffered a rib fracture, a broken right shoulder and hand, along with bruised lungs and a dislocated collarbone.
Evenepoel wrote in a post on Instagram on Wednesday: “After a scary crash during training on Tuesday, I underwent surgery and everything went well.”
He added that, given the nature of the injuries, “there will be a long recovery journey, but I am fully focused on recovering and determined to return stronger, step by step.”
The team mentioned that Evenepoel will undergo a two-week period of stabilization, after which a plan will be made for his return to training.
