Farmers Warn of Delayed Irrigation Problem-Solving
Sudan Events – Follow-ups
Farmers in the Al-Managil project have raised concerns over the slow resolution of irrigation problems, warning that it threatens wheat crops with drought, especially as some areas have already begun germination.
In press statements, they pointed out that irrigation canals have suffered from breakages and blockages caused by military operations, sabotage by the Rapid Support Forces militia, or intentional breaches by locals trying to protect their villages from attacks by the same militia.
Farmers noted that they now have to pay approximately 1.5 million SDG to clear and open 1.5 kilometers of irrigation canals. This was reported by farmers in the Na’ama office under the Al-Mansi division. Despite promises from the Governor of the Gezira Project to resolve the issues, no action has been taken.
Additionally, farmers are grappling with high fertilizer and fuel costs and a lack of funding across divisions like Al-Mansi, Al-Mukashfi, Ma’toug, Al-Tahameed, and Al-Matori.
They highlighted that they are farming under dire conditions, relying solely on personal funding.
