Portuguese Vítor Pereira Appointed as Wolverhampton Manager
English club Wolverhampton has announced the appointment of Portuguese coach Vítor Pereira as the team’s manager, following the dismissal of his predecessor, Gary O’Neil, last week.
The British news agency PA Media reported that Pereira signed an 18-month contract after reaching a compensation agreement with his former club, Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia.
The 56-year-old coach, who previously managed FC Porto and Olympiacos, conducted his first training session with his new team on Thursday in preparation for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Leicester City.
According to the German news agency DPA, Wolverhampton’s chairman Jeff Shi, who has faced significant criticism from fans, said:
“We are delighted to welcome Vítor Pereira to the club as our new first-team head coach.”
He added:
“Vítor is a highly respected coach with vast experience and a record of success in various leagues. He will bring a new approach to the challenges ahead.”
Shi continued:
“This is an important moment for the club, and we want to thank Vítor for taking on this responsibility.”
The chairman also expressed confidence in Pereira’s ability to turn things around, stating:
“We have great faith in his ability to get us back on track, supported by the players, staff, and the entire club.”
Pereira takes charge of a team struggling in this season’s Premier League. O’Neil was dismissed after a 4-0 loss to Ipswich Town last Saturday, marking the team’s fourth consecutive defeat. Wolverhampton is currently 19th (second to last) in the league standings, with 9 points from 16 matches.
