Luis Enrique: Improving Our Squad Is Difficult Because It’s Already Strong

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique said his team would focus on developing young talent rather than seeking reinforcements during the January transfer window, as they already have a strong squad. This comes ahead of their French Cup clash against Lens on Sunday.
With the departure of star player Kylian Mbappé and midfielders Manuel Ugarte and Danilo Pereira last season, PSG has embarked on a new chapter filled with emerging talents.
The defending Ligue 1 champions, once known for high-profile signings like Neymar Jr. and Lionel Messi, have shifted to a more measured approach.
The Spaniard told reporters on Saturday: “What Christmas gift do I want? I’m very happy with the squad. Staying focused is the best approach during the transfer window. It’s hard to improve our squad. We want to develop our young talent. Regarding transfers, we already have a great team. Last year, we made over 10 signings. There’s no urgent need, but if there’s a chance to strengthen, that’s great.”
PSG, the record holders with 15 French Cup titles, aim to claim their 16th this season, starting with their first-round match against Lens, currently seventh in Ligue 1.
PSG tops the French league with 40 points, 10 ahead of nearest rivals Olympique Marseille, but they’ve struggled in the Champions League, where they are in 25th place and need to work hard to stay in the competition, which resumes next month.
Luis Enrique added: “From January onward, we’ll be competing in all tournaments, and it will be very demanding… I’d like the players to have some rest. It’s all about completely switching off now so we can perform at our best in the second half of the season.”
Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma will miss out after sustaining a facial injury in PSG’s 4-2 win over Monaco on Wednesday, while defender Nuno Mendes is ready to return after recovering from a thigh injury sustained in the victory over Lyon.
