Van Dijk: No Deadline to Decide My Future
Dutch international Virgil van Dijk, the captain and defender of Liverpool, stated on Monday that there is “no deadline” to decide his future with the Premier League leaders, despite his contract nearing its end.
Van Dijk’s current contract ends at the conclusion of the season, and starting from January 1, he will be able to negotiate with other clubs.
However, it is highly likely that the Dutch defender will remain at Anfield.
Van Dijk commented on this matter: “There is absolutely no deadline. We’ll see what the future holds. Is there any new development? No.”
Van Dijk is one of three key players whose contracts expire in six months, alongside defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah.
Salah has moved into fourth place on Liverpool’s all-time top scorers list with 229 goals, following his brace in the dominant 6-3 win over Tottenham on Sunday in matchweek 17.
The Egyptian international has scored 18 goals across all competitions this season, 15 of them in the league, and has also provided 15 assists. Salah had scored 44 goals across all competitions during his first season at Liverpool in 2017-2018.
Van Dijk hopes the 32-year-old forward can deliver his best season yet for the club, which leads the Premier League with 39 points, four ahead of second-place Chelsea.
The Dutch defender praised his Egyptian teammate, saying, “The numbers speak for themselves.”
He continued, “He is an exceptional athlete. He is performing brilliantly for the club, and I hope he can have his best season ever, remaining crucial with his goals and assists, and being decisive.”
He added, “He’s a professional. We’ve been through this situation, and so has he, so let’s move on to the next match. As for next season? I don’t know.”
