Sudan Events – Follow-up
The Executive Director of Dongola Locality, Dr. Makawi Al-Khair, called on farmers in the locality to engage in planting the remaining targeted areas for wheat cultivation.
He emphasized, according to Sudan News Agency (SUNA), that efforts have been integrated and are ongoing to provide seeds through local production and the Resilience Project, in collaboration with the World Food Programme. Efforts are also underway to secure fertilizer from neighboring Egypt.
He mentioned that the areas planted with wheat represent approximately 75% of the targeted wheat cultivation area, which is 61,000 acres, and pointed out the stability of electricity supply and availability of diesel.
Makawi confirmed that efforts are well underway, with daily follow-ups from the state governor, to establish a conversion station in East Nile as a permanent solution to the electricity issue in East Nile Unit, which is the top agricultural production locality in the state.
Regarding the growth of other winter crops, he stated that the winter crops are growing excellently, and there are no issues affecting their growth.
Makawi also noted that the agricultural authorities and local authorities had carried out operations to combat desert locusts that affected the East Unit. He confirmed that the local efforts to combat the locust swarms that recently appeared had been highly successful, effectively eliminating the swarms.
