Gedarif Governor: No Money Laundering or Counterfeit Currency Cases in the State
Sudan Events – Follow-ups
Gedarif Governor, General Mohamed Ahmed Hassan, confirmed that no cases of money laundering or counterfeit currency had been recorded as a result of the currency exchange decision.
During a press briefing at the Central Bank of Sudan’s Gedarif branch on Saturday, he urged all citizens to hurry and deposit the specified currency denominations for exchange before the extension period ends on December 30.
The governor criticized the banks for not linking their banking applications with each other, pointing out the cooperation of all banks, which have been working late into the night and sending teams to remote areas.
He emphasized the important role played by all security agencies in securing the process and monitoring efforts, urging media personnel to encourage citizens to use banking applications instead of paper currency, as this is a global trend that reduces the use of physical currency.
Dr. Abdullah Tekron, the manager of the Central Bank of Sudan’s Gedarif branch, confirmed that the higher committee for currency exchange had achieved noticeable success, adding that most of the targeted currency denominations had been collected at the Central Bank, with a large portion of it being burned. He confirmed the public’s response to the deposit and account opening procedures.
He also noted that the Central Bank of Sudan is distributing adequate amounts of new currency and has not received any complaints about its scarcity, as it provides banks with the requested new currency, which they distribute to citizens according to the prescribed limit of 200,000 Sudanese pounds.
On the other hand, the representative of the security committee in the state, Brigadier Ahmed Ali Abdul Rahman, confirmed that the work is proceeding smoothly in securing and monitoring the currency exchange process. He commended the response of the Central Bank, commercial banks, and all financial institutions in working with customers during the exchange operation.
