The Minister of Investment and International Cooperation, Dr. Ahlam Madani Mahdi, called on the Chairman of the National Free Zones and Markets Council to prioritize free zones due to their significant role in economic development.
On Monday, Ahlam chaired the second meeting of the National Free Zones and Markets Council at the Trade Hall in Port Sudan, with the presence of the Ministers of Trade and Industry, the Undersecretary of Justice, the Director-General of Customs, and the Directors of Taxation, Standards and Metrology, along with a representative of the Employers Union, Economic Security, and the Secretary-General of the National Free Zones and Markets Council.
The meeting discussed various topics, including the importance of free zones and their role in economic development. It also reviewed the council’s performance report for 2024-2025, focusing on the establishment of new free zones based on specific priorities. The plan has been integrated into the state’s strategic programs by incorporating the free zones into national plans.
The emphasis was placed on pharmaceutical industries, with a focus on resolving electricity issues through alternative energy in coordination with the Ministry of Energy. Additionally, national consultancies and expert houses were consulted to promote free zone culture.
It was also noted that in the coming period, a free zone will be established in the Red Sea state to facilitate the attraction and targeting of investments. The Minister emphasized the importance of studying regional and international experiences in managing free zones to improve performance and open the door for private sector involvement.
A review of the laws and regulations governing the operation of free zones was proposed, and a specialized committee was formed, headed by the Secretary-General of the National Free Zones and Markets Council, with membership from Customs and the Employers Union.
