Amorim: United Can Win Any Match

Portuguese coach Rúben Amorim, manager of Manchester United, acknowledged on Friday that his team is going through a “difficult” period. On Sunday, they will face the “best team” in the Premier League this season, Liverpool, in Matchweek 20. Despite this, he insisted that United is “capable of winning any match.”
The Red Devils have only secured one victory in their last six league matches, suffering five defeats. Currently, they sit in 14th place with 22 points. On Sunday, they will visit Liverpool at Anfield, where they haven’t won a league match since January 2016.
Amorim, who was appointed in November, said during the pre-match press conference: “Of course, it’s a tough period because we’re losing a lot of matches, and we’re facing the best team this season.”
He added: “In football, anything can happen in a single game. If you talk about this season, the better team wins most of the time. Right now, they are better than us, but we can win any match.”
Amorim emphasized that past losses against Liverpool, including the 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford last September, are unlikely to intimidate him.
“I focus on performance. I don’t think about losing or what could happen. We’ve prepared for this match to win, and we know what’s ahead of us,” said the former Sporting CP coach.
Amorim also revealed that winger Marcus Rashford is unlikely to play against Liverpool due to illness. While he avoided discussing the January transfer window in detail, he confirmed the club is close to renewing the contract of Ivorian winger Amad Diallo (22), whose contract was set to expire soon. Additionally, United has decided to extend defender Harry Maguire’s (31) contract until 2026.
“We’ll activate the option (to extend for an additional year). He needs to improve as a leader (Maguire) because we lack leaders on the pitch, but we’re happy to continue with Harry,” Amorim said.
