Sudan Events – Follow-ups
On Thursday, Member of the Sovereign Council, Assistant Commander-in-Chief, Major General Engineer Ibrahim Jaber Ibrahim, chaired the meeting of the Supreme Committee for Currency Change and Replacement in Port Sudan, with the presence of Minister of Finance Dr. Jibril Ibrahim and the full membership of the committee.
Minister of Culture and Information and official government spokesperson, Khalid Al-Iaiser, explained that the meeting discussed the progress of the currency replacement process after the deadline was extended until January 6. It reviewed reports submitted by the Central Bank of Sudan regarding the progress made in the replacement process.
He pointed out that the committee also discussed how to support citizens and encourage them to open bank accounts, considering this as vital for the replacement and deposit process. He acknowledged that the state faced significant challenges in this process, primarily the need for engagement with electronic payment systems.
The committee also discussed the issue of linking banking applications and directed that efforts be accelerated to establish connections between banks to facilitate the electronic transfer of funds.
The government spokesperson stated that reports had been monitored regarding groups speculating in gold and crops, urging citizens to be cautious when dealing with these groups, as some entities with political agendas are trying to exploit the currency replacement process for political goals unrelated to the currency swap. He clarified that security reports had observed attempts by rebel-linked groups to destabilize this national process, urging the public to support this process as it protects the economy and fortifies the state against violations committed by the rebellious militias.
He emphasized that there are attempts to involve political issues in the currency replacement process and appealed to citizens to be vigilant, as some political entities aim to pass their agendas and support the rebellion by sabotaging this national effort, reiterating that the Sudanese people are highly aware and informed.
