Urgent Appeal to the Sovereign Council to Save the Agricultural Season in Gedaref
Sudan Events – Follow-up
The Secretary-General of the Higher Coordination for Eastern Sudan Entities and former independent MP for the Fashaga constituency, Mubarak Al-Nur Abdullah, confirmed that the issue of liquidity shortage in banks threatens the harvest season in Gedaref.
Al-Nur made an urgent appeal to the Sovereign Council to intervene and save the season, noting that this year was marked by heavy rains and abundant production.
In a statement, Al-Nur said that the risks are related to the inability of farmers to harvest their crops due to the lack of liquidity, given that most of the labor used during the harvest season is foreign workers from neighboring countries like Ethiopia and South Sudan. According to the Central Bank of Sudan’s law, these workers are not allowed to open bank accounts, and even Sudanese workers face many challenges.
He added that many farming areas lack communication networks and banks, as they are remote regions far from the cities with banks.
He also pointed out that they had previously visited Port Sudan with a delegation and met with relevant authorities, but so far, no solution has been found.
The statement concluded, “Thus, we hold the Higher Committee for Currency Substitution fully responsible if the harvest season fails in Gedaref state.”
