Bundesliga to Implement Semi-Automated Offside Technology Next Season
Knut Kircher, head of the referees’ committee at the German Football Association (DFB), confirmed to Kicker magazine on Monday that semi-automated offside technology will be introduced in Bundesliga matches starting next season.
This technology aims to make offside decisions faster and more accurate than those made through the regular VAR system.
It has been used in several major leagues and tournaments, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2024. The system relies on cameras in the stadium linked to an electronic chip inside the ball, allowing the VAR to relay decisions to the on-field referee.
Kircher also mentioned that the Bundesliga is experimenting with a system where referees announce the outcomes of video reviews to fans present at the stadium.
He added that they are awaiting further guidance from FIFA, emphasizing that all aspects of the technology, such as displaying images on the stadium screens, must function correctly to enhance the transparency of refereeing decisions.
