Suleima Ishaq, the head of Sudan’s unit for combating violence against women, stated that the unit documented 554 cases of rape in Sudan.
She emphasized that this number is low compared to the actual situation, revealing that the militia has raped hundreds of women, if not more. Suleima explained that the reason not all cases were recorded includes factors such as “cutting off communication and women’s decision not to report out of fear of social stigma.”
Ishaq considered that “the international community was very late in recognizing the militia’s crimes,” stating that these forces have used sexual violence as a clear and systematic weapon in the war.
