Moyes Confident in Repeating Everton’s Previous Success
David Moyes, Everton’s manager, said on Monday that he is confident in his ability to lead the team to repeat its previous success after about 12 years since his first tenure with the club. During that time, he led Everton to a top-four finish in the Premier League, their only such achievement in the last 37 years. Moyes spent 11 years at Goodison Park before moving to Manchester United in 2013.
The 61-year-old Scottish manager replaced Sean Dyche, who was sacked last Thursday, just hours before Everton’s 2-0 win over third-tier Peterborough in the FA Cup third round.
Everton, currently sitting 16th in the Premier League, will host Aston Villa next Wednesday. The team has won only one of their last 11 league games and just three games all season, leaving them one point above the relegation zone and prompting the club to part ways with Dyche.
Under their new American owners, the Friedkin Group, Everton has tasked Moyes with leading the team through this new era, avoiding relegation, and overseeing their move to the new Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium next season.
Moyes, who left West Ham United by mutual consent at the end of last season, told reporters on Monday: “I had many other opportunities since leaving West Ham, but I didn’t feel ready. However, I always felt that if I was offered this job (managing Everton) – which I didn’t expect – it would be an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I want to show I can move forward and prove myself again.”
