Serie A: Udinese Falls to Como for the First Time Since 1986

Udinese suffered its first defeat to Como since 1986 with a heavy 4-1 loss away from home on Monday, in the closing match of the 21st round of the Italian Serie A.

Como secured its fifth win of the season and its first victory against Udinese since a 3-1 triumph on November 30, 1986. Since then, the two teams had met four times in Serie A, with Como losing three matches and drawing one. This victory was sealed in the first half thanks to goals by Spanish-Senegalese player Hassan Diao (5’) and Brazilian Gabriel Strefezza (44’), who also provided the assist for the opening goal.

Early in the second half, Argentine Martín Payero narrowed the deficit (50’), but both teams were reduced to 10 players after Edoardo Goldaniga (Como) and Frenchman Omar Soulet (Udinese) received two yellow cards and were sent off in the 57th and 63rd minutes, respectively.

Ten minutes before the end of the match, Slovenian defender Jaka Bijol inadvertently scored an own goal, dealing a decisive blow to Udinese (78’). Argentine substitute Nico Paz added a fourth goal in the final seconds of the match (90’).

This win lifts Como to 22 points, placing them in 13th position, while Udinese remains at 26 points in 10th place, having suffered their ninth defeat of the season and their first in five rounds, following a run of three consecutive draws.
