Luis de la Fuente’s Contract Extended Until 2028

The Spanish Football Federation has extended the contract of Spain’s national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, who led the team to win the UEFA Euro 2024 title, until 2028, as announced on Monday.
The Federation stated that De la Fuente, 63, who took over in 2022 and won the UEFA Nations League title the following year, will remain in charge after the 2028 European Championship, which will be hosted by England, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
The statement said: “The Spanish Football Federation has agreed to renew confidence in Luis de la Fuente, who will remain the head coach of the national team after the 2028 European Championship.” He will lead the team in the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
De la Fuente had previously won the European Championships with Spain’s U-19 and U-21 teams in 2015 and 2019, respectively, and earned a silver medal with the Olympic team at the 2020 Tokyo Games. He succeeded Luis Enrique as the senior national team coach after Spain’s elimination in the Round of 16 by Morocco in the 2022 Qatar World Cup. On their way to their fourth record European Championship title last year, Spain won all seven of their matches. The team will begin their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign later this year, after finishing the UEFA Nations League, with a quarterfinal match against the Netherlands in March.
