Former German national team defender Mats Hummels has expressed his sadness over the current struggles of his former club, Borussia Dortmund.
Speaking to RTL and NTV ahead of his current club Roma’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday, Hummels said: “It’s painful to see this, especially because of my love for the club.”
However, he added that some of these issues were foreseeable.
“Some crises don’t develop in just a few weeks; they’ve been brewing for a long time. I think we’re now seeing the consequences of problems that have existed for quite a while,” he explained.
Dortmund currently sits 11th in the Bundesliga table and has won just one of its last nine away matches, suffering six defeats in that run. The team has already been eliminated from the German Cup and is likely to miss out on direct qualification for the Champions League Round of 16.
Dortmund recently dismissed head coach Nuri Sahin and is struggling to find a new manager. Interim coach Mike Tullberg led the team against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga and will oversee their Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk later today.
Despite these setbacks, Hummels remains confident that the club will find a solution.
“Of course, I hope everything gets back on track quickly,” he said.
Hummels played for Dortmund from 2009 to 2016 and again from 2019 to 2024, leaving the club after his contract was not renewed.
