UNESCO is intensifying its support for cultural workers in Ukraine, who are contributing to the country’s reconstruction amidst the ongoing war with Russia.
During her second visit to the country, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay inaugurated a cultural center in the western city of Lviv, according to the German Press Agency (DPA). The center serves as a space for work, exhibitions, and training for artists from across Ukraine. Lviv, located near the Polish border, has become a refuge for many.
The center also plans to implement a program for art and cultural therapy aimed at war victims.
During her visit, Azoulay launched an initiative to support approximately 300 Ukrainian female artists and to protect Jewish heritage. This includes training 50 experts to document and preserve historic Jewish archives.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, UNESCO has provided nearly €68 million ($71 million) to Ukraine across sectors such as culture, education, science, and media.
The UNESCO office in Kyiv, established in September 2022, has deployed over 35 experts to assess damage, secure museum collections, restore monuments, provide remote education and psychosocial support for students, and offer training and equipment for journalists operating in the country.
